Russia has introduced new altitude restrictions for civil aircraft operating in Moscow airspace, citing security concerns. Under the new measures, the maximum operating altitude for civil flights has been limited to approximately 4,900 metres, while temporary restrictions have also been imposed on transit traffic passing through the area.
The decision was reportedly taken following an increase in drone attacks targeting Moscow and the surrounding region. Authorities said the measure is intended to allow aircraft to divert and land at the nearest airport more quickly in the event of a potential threat.
Experts have warned that operating at lower altitudes could increase fuel consumption and extend flight times. Airlines expect the new restrictions to cause delays of up to 20 to 30 minutes on some services.
